So today we experimented with a new Vanilla theme (or well, people said they did something similar before, and it's not the most creative idea, but I thought I should post it anyway!)
I present King of the Hill.
Day 1, the town picks a King by lynch.
Any later Day is split into two phases. First there's a discussion phase. During this phase, people are allowed to "challenge" the King by bolding it in chat if they want. If they challenge the King, only them and the King will be able to be lynched, and the town decides which one becomes the new King, and which one will be lynched. If someone is elected as King, whether on Day 1 or through a challenge, they always get a phase to eliminate someone immediately afterwards. Afterwards, the game continues as normal.
If this doesn't happen, then there's a phase where the King may choose who to lynch. This is only after the previous phase to prevent a Mafia King from simply spamming their lynch at the start of each day.
Mafia wins when they occupy 50% of the remaining players, and thus can't possibly lose anymore (even in 1v1 against Town king, they can challenge and stall). Town wins when all Mafia are dead.
This should follow the rolelists of other nightless Vanilla themes like mod.exe I think. What do you think?

This looks really interesting. Feels like modexe without corrupts, and I definitely like the challenge mechanic better. Leave the power in a strong player’s hands, and if they aren’t doing a great job challenge them for kingship. I can already see some nice scum wifom king plays with this too. Really excited and hope this theme becomes a staple hard tbh

I really enjoyed this.
Y'all know I'm a big proponent of Playing the Game (i.e., reading), and I think this is a setup that highly encourages that. For all the talk around active v. passive playstyles and townleading v. sheeping, I find myself pushing back a lot against situations where the problem is not that one person has too much control, but rather, town is allowing one person to have too much control. The challenging dynamic in particular, I think, does a good job of holding town accountable for not only what happens, but what has been permitted to happen to to players' action or inaction.
In me & derp's game, there was a situation where maf was given early control of the vote, and it was nice to be able to say not only "You've been mislynching," but also "You've expressed reluctance to control the vote but have had no issue using your kingvote to mislynch and blame it on vox pop vox regis".

this probably just turns the theme into modexe but i think allowing scum to make someone a hero might be something interesting to try out

PLEASE after playing a 25 player variant, please limit the amount of challenges you can have before letting someone lynch, having someone be challenged 4 times in a row is just boring and unfun

Avalon has this thing where if enough mission parties get rejected then the next party is auto approved, I think thats what TBZ is talking about? Havent played the theme but theoratically implementing it like that looks ok

I feel like it'd be reasonable to allow the King to get a lynch immediately after they are "elected" (so after Day 1 / Challenge phases). Otherwise, I feel like more than that would cause the King to be able to get too many lynches off at once, especially near lylo.

I’m not saying eliminate challenges lol. Otherwise that would be unbalanced too, but having it so that a king has to sit through 4 challenges is just brain dead
