Classic Mafia is a great theme for users who are new and its always a universal favorite. Most of the roles you see in Classic you will see in other more complex themes such as Greater Idea Mafia. Here are general Tips and Strategies that I like to use when playing Town.
Follow-The-Cop
Now now normally it is not good to claim power roles day one however in classic there exist two power roles of importance, Cop and Doctor. The Cop can inspect a player at night and get either that player's Role or their Alignment. The Doctor can protect a player at night and saves them from All Night kills that target them. How this set up works is if you are Cop, you claim right at day start when roles are sent. If you are Doctor then you stay hidden and protect the Cop each nigt. What makes this combination so good is that the Doctor protects the Cop from nightkills and in return the Cop either gets a town result and clears that player or gets a Mafia or Werewolf result and gets that player lynch. The best thing scum can do when town is doing this is either CounterClaim Cop (Note This is only effective when the Werewolf isn't around as Werewolf will most likely target one of the cop claims, or stay hidden and try and find Doctor kill him and then go for Cop. This is a great Strategy for winning as Town.
Pretty Lady Overpowered (Abbrivated as PLOP)
Another Strategy that I like that is often overlooked because Follow-The-Cop is better is PLOP. This works the same way as Follow-The-Cop, you have a known Pretty Lady using her night action on players and a hidden Doctor protecting the Pretty Lady. Why this is a good Strategy is because with the Doctor on Pretty Lady, The PL is able to check for who is Werewolf. Normally, if a Pretty Lady blocks a Werewolf she redirects the kill to herself, but because Doctor is now on her, the Pretty Lady won't die from the Werewolf kill. When the night ends and host announce No Deaths, the Pretty Lady knows that she block a scum kill and can town tell who that person is. They lynch that person and eliminate them from the game. This can swing the endgame in Town's favor when it otherwise wouldn't be. Be careful though, a crafty scum might idle on purpose in order to throw off town as to who is and isn't Mafia.
Hypo
Hypo is a fairly well known strategy here. It involves everyone in the town claiming cop (or any other power roles but it's most commonly used with cop). The reason why we hypo is simple, to throw off Mafia. In Classic 8, as well as Classic 14-20, Mafia get a Power Role called Mafia Pretty Lady. The Role itself is the exact same as Town Pretty Role, just sided with Mafia. This role can block the Cop which would prevent him from getting inspections and being able to whittle down the list of scums. So, town hypos so Mafia doesn't know which is actually cop, and town gives fake inspections in order to keep the hypo going. When the Town Cop or Mafia Pretty Lady goes down, that's usually when the Hypo ends.
How I Play Day 1 is very simple, as long as it's not Classic 8, 14, 15, 16 , 17, 18, 19, or 20 I like to wait for Cop to claim. After cop claims I like to lynch the other players for reactions so I can build reads. I always want Cop to take note of the reactions of the other players and to base his first inspection on that. If I am the Cop, I usually have my Night 1 inspection based on my null reads (players who i neither town read nor scum read). I inspect these players because if a player is scummy we'll probably end up lynching them, and if that player is Townie scum will most likely kill them, so Scum try to fall in the middle. If i have no null reads then something I like to do is have a list of questions and notes I keep to myself to determine who my first inspection is. My Questions I often like to ask to myself include "Did this player try to bandwagon" "Was this player buddy anyone or was buddied by anyone else" "Did this player try to fly under the radar and avoid most of day 1". If my result is Mafia I'll tell the town that this person is mafia and start lynching them. While it may seem favorable to just end the day there I often like the day to go on, because Scum will often try to end day quick so Town has less to work with at night. If my inspection is a Town Power Role then I don't reveal which power role they are, I usually say "This player is Town" and move on. Town needs to give Mafia as little info as possible because the more info mafia has, the more likely they are to hit Doctor and end the Follow the Cop.
If it is one of the classic themes listed above, then I like to try and be the first to claim cop even if I actually am cop. If I am Vanilla Townie I like to soft that I'm cop hard and attempt to take the kill or Roleblock for Cop. If I'm Cop then i usually stay a lot more hidden and don't play as risky. Another thing I really like to do as Vanilla Townie is claim Roleblock. If I'm lucky, Mafia Pretty Lady would have blocked me the night before, and if they see that they blocked me, then they will stay on me, meaning I bait the Roleblocks for cop and cop can keep getting inspections.
