Thank you for agreeing to be interviewed! Would you like to introduce yourself?
Hello! I'm Drookez, a former mafia room mod. I started playing mafia on PS back in like 2014 when the second voice challenge was happening. I stumbled upon the event through PS news and thought that the game was quite fun! I ended up winning the challenge and continued to play in the room, eventually getting voiced and promoted to staff later. I eventually stepped down in I think 2017 due to inactivity but I still hang around in the room often! These days, I mainly play orgs and eimms like many other ex mafia staff! So yeah, if you see me around, feel free to say hi! ❤️
hey! I'm superstarsrock, or ssr for short, currently 22 (23 next month), and living in NY. I found smogon one day when looking up sets for my mons in PokeMMO, and realized PS was a way easier way to build teams and play in tournaments so I just moved there :Cate:
I got my bachelors degree in accounting this past winter, and am now starting a masters program in finance with a concentration in financial crimes. In my free time I play a ton of baseball, and I also got obsessed with golf and chess over quarantine and still play both a ton now (I know I'm an old man now). I've also stuck around the community through the smorgon online survivor games on circus maximus, hosting a couple of those seasons as well as one of the semi-annual 80 player "bigvivors" that are run every now and then.
ps mafia was actually my first introduction to mafia! I mostly hung around the tournaments room when I found the site originally, and befriended Cyberfrog who was one of the staff members there that would stream tournaments occasionally. One night around summer 2014, I tuned in and he was streaming games in the mafia room instead, so I joined to see what the fuss was all about. My first game was a 20 player AitC game, where of course I rolled king. I actually ended up never getting shot and winning, and I was immediately hooked!
I think his stream had brought a bunch of tours players over for the night, so it was definitely more active than usual. That night was an absolute blast, and I remember playing more games nearly every day that week afterwards.
What was the voice challenge like?
My memory is fading. I think it was a challenge where you get points based on winning games hosted by staff but you could also earn points through set achievements for a particular theme (this was way back when everything was on a google doc and there weren't a lot of themes). But yeah, I don't really remember the details but the one thing I remember is really enjoying the game and meeting people.
What was the room like when you joined?
Everything was manual for one. Nowadays we have a script to automate a lot of the hosting but when I started you just had to get a staff to temporarily voice you and you would just do everything via text - no bots to help you out! The themes were very limited and some weren't even mafia (looking at you voodoo lady and dethy). There was no website or forum either and everything was just on a google doc.
It was definitely more of a wild west feel than it is nowadays. I remember days where Swaggytrainer and i would just go back and forth hosting games for the same 8 people, and just loving every second of it. There were a lot of fun player made themes, and sometimes a staff member would stop by and test out some crazy theme with questionable balance, so it was never too stale. My main memories I think of when I look back are the people though, it was such a welcoming community and there's a ton of friends I made back then who I still talk to today!
You dislike Dethy? rssp won't be happy with that
I don't dislike Dethy, but it was more of a logical puzzle than mafia I'd say! My favorite theme was definitely classic, it's just simple and fun with a good variety of roles especially with bigger pls. Another theme that I remember is SSBB mafia which was chaotic but super fun to play (and hard to host). I also like GI due to the variety of roles!
I remember you always seemed to be Mafia, how did that happen?
Might just be the luck of the draw LMAO I just ended up being mafia so often that it became a meme, and I think some hosts might have nudged the rng a little bit to make me mafia... right? 😉
What about Drookez is Mafia Mafia?
Oh yes, Drookez is mafia mafia. I think you created the theme right? It's a really fun theme honestly and I like it a lot. It also made my name stick around in the room even if I'm not as active anymore. When I get online, sometimes people would dm me whether I'm the Drookez referenced in that theme.
What was your favorite theme?
My favorite was always fire emblem mafia, despite not ever playing the games themselves I latched onto that one early and declared it my favorite. I just opened my google docs history to check, and there's more rule docs here than I can count of themes that probably only got played a handful of times, but it was always cool seeing the creativity users put into their own setups and playing themes that someone put a ton of effort into, even if most of them weren't very balanced :Cate:
I remember this one getting banned bc it wasn't close enough to being an actual mafia game docs.google.com/document/d/19fj1B9BkJgQV55jeyrq0ETFfGccT9zyEvbXpldgJp8Y/edit
Classic was definitely my go-to too, but I also really enjoyed playing lighthouse back in the day. The chaos of the darkness days with anonymous messages was wildly entertaining, and while not perfectly balanced it gave us a different type of mafia game to play where info was limited unless you made the correct reads, which I felt suited my playstyle well.

What are some of the most important changes that were made to Mafia?
I think the introduction of BoTTT and its newer variations were really good in keeping the room orderly and making it easier to hosts. We also moved from a google doc to a website, thankfully! There are also a lot of new things such as official games and even basic things such as "mafiasignup" which made things easier. I also remember that mafia staff chat used to be on smogon forums, the horror. Glad we moved to skype and eventually discord.
How was your journey in the Mafia room?
I was very much a naive teenager when I joined the room originally, and I remember vividly how badly I wanted to be staff. After about a month of activity I got voiced, and from there I waited another couple months before going on my campaign to be promoted to staff. I think there was even a pastebin I made of reasons I should be promoted, like I was going down the checklist of what not to do if you wanted staff. Looking back, it definitely worked against me, and in fairness to the staff at the time I definitely needed time to mature before getting the spot so if anything it helped them make the right decision. My favorite aspects of being staff were moderating the room and making sure games stayed on track, so when everything started becoming automated and the role became more of a setup approving/greater idea command entering job I began to lose interest and eventually resigned. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as staff though, and it's something that I look back on fondly.
I was definitely more of a fan of manual hosting, yeah. I think the automation was definitely the right direction for the room to take, and it's obviously way more streamlined now, but the mafia room I always enjoyed was with a manual host running everything, and I always enjoyed running games myself when I got the opportunity.
Would you say there's an advantage to manual hosting?
For posting votecounts and resolving deadlines, obviously a bot is going to be better at handling stuff like that, but I guess I'm just stuck in my ways and always enjoyed knowing it was another person doing everything on the hosting end. It just felt more personal and definitely a touch nostalgic.
Do you prefer hosting or playing Mafia?
Probably hosting, I always got a lot of joy out of being omniscient and seeing the interactions of night actions play out in real time. Hosting official games was always a good time as well, everyone would be tryharding and I got to sit back and watch the show.
What's one thing you can do to elevate your hosts?
Definitely adding flavor. My favorite hosts were always the one that would tell a story when announcing deaths, it would build up the suspense and also felt more exciting than just "IgpayAtinlay died, they were VT." I can't think of anyone who did this often off the top of my head, but those are the games that stuck with me the most for sure.
What would you tell new Mafia players who want to become staff?
Just be a positive precense in the room! Staff are always looking for mature and reliable users who can help improve the room and keep things running smoothly, so if you're active and contributing positively, they'll take notice. It's been said a million times before, but asking for staff is the easiest way to get passed over for staff, and you're better off working towards it quietly than campaigning for it publicly.
What's the difference between being staff and what regs think being staff is like?
You're asking me to go way back for that one. I think when I was a reg I only saw the obvious things staff members do, like moderate the room and approve hosts/setups. What I learned as staff is all the behind the scenes work that gets done, like discussing user promotions and coming up with events for current users as well as ways to recruit new people to the room. It's definitely a big committment at times, especially for the mods and ROs, but I'm happy to see that there hasn't been a lack of people to step up when others move on and that the room is still going strong today.
How would you describe your playstyle?
I'm so removed from mafia that when you asked that question I immediately thought of how I would play in an org or eimm LOL. But for mafia, I'd say I'm not the most active contributor to discussion but I like to scumhunt by feeling people rather than playing more logically unless I have an information role. If I were mafia I would try to lay back and blend in as much as possible.
When I played mafia, I always liked to try to "solve" the game as quickly as possible, and narrow down the potential scum as a town player until I had a small pool of people to go after. I definitely leaned on info roles a lot to give me confirmed reads, like I was playing a big logic puzzle and needed to use the clues I had to find out who was which role. I wasn't necessarily the best player, but I could use the info I did have to make the best informed decision I could, all while yelling in gamechat that my reads were perfect and that everyone should listen to me, which understandably didn't work very often 😅
As mafia, I always would get a bit nervous and in my head about not acting suspicious, which in turn always ended up with me seeming more suspicious, go figure. I think I succeeded most when I had a strong partner I could play off of, and my favorite memories of games as mafia were when I'd partner up with one of my friends and we'd scheme our way to the end together by manipulating votes and killing anyone who started to catch on.
What's your favorite role to play as?
Either doctor or pretty lady, I loved being able to use my reads to predict who was going to make the kill as mafia that night or who they would try to kill, and hitting that prediction to save a town death while in turn getting town more info was always a blast for me.
My favorite play I'd pull would be in games where the cop would claim uncountered, so everyone is expecting the doc to target them. I'd risk mafia making that assumption as well and try to protect whoever I thought they'd guess the doctor would be to try to prevent a death. It worked at least a couple times and every time it did I always felt like a genius, worth the risk if I do say so myself.
What are some of your favorite memories of PS! Mafia?
Just hanging out chatting with people in the room is always fun and I enjoy playing games with them too! Other memories that I remember are the second voice challenge of course, psanon, boTTT randomly banning everyone in the room and its obsession with rssp1, testing out the script for the first time and it glitching all of us out of ps, the asian gang who's always online at dead hours, mafia awards etc! That's what pops up atm.
psanon is an anon forum mafia game that ajhockeystar hosts and I played in quite a lof them. There were just so many funny moments from those games over the years such as "I here I'm villy right" that i think aj mentioned earlier, me completely flopping by not voting ODM to save myself who turned out to be mafia, "Dorian made the right choice" and just overall fun things.
boTTT was a mafia bot to help with hosting but one day it just completely roombanned everyone in order of the userlist which was very funny and weird LOL
It also liked to warn rssp1 for stretching and caps and stuff so much that he was branded a zero tolerance user
As for the script, I'm referring to the first automated thing we tried to run games with way back. I think we joined it similar to how we join tourneys on PS, but when we first tried it out it would just crash PS and we couldn't get back online it was someting.
the asian gang refers to me, singapore, gary oakster, yaraelpoof etc etc who would always be on when i come back home from school, something like 5-6 am est
and i'm sure you all are familiar with mafia awards
I've got a bunch of funny memories from old games that are all over that massive quotes thread, and my favorite thread was always the mafia room memes thread where everyone just posted the same homer simpson gif over and over until it got locked. I'll shoutout the psanon games aj hosted as well, those were my first introduction to forum mafia and I really enjoyed tryharding those to get as high as possible on the leaderboard (5th place for eternity now 😤). Of course, there's also the running jokes, like rssp and I being the same person and also his love/hate relationship with boTTT.
How has Mafia changed your life?
It's kinda crazy to think about, but mafia opened the door to me meeting so many wonderful people who I keep in contact with even today. For example, I'm currently playing a survivor game through circus maximus, and both Drookez and Sanjana are there. I've gone to multiple irl meetups in the past couple years and gotten to meet other friends I met through mafia, like aj rssp and Hannah. Those friends got me to join discord and play other games on here, which in turn led to meeting even more amazing people, which has been a massive source of happiness in my life. If I had never found my way to the mafia room all those years ago, I probably would've never met all those friends and more, so I'd say it has impacted my life in an extremely positive way!
What are some memorable people to you from PS! Mafia who you'd like to give a shoutout?
I shouted out ajhockeystar back in my first staff interview and I still have to shout him out here because I still talk to him quite often and he's just awesome!!! Did i mention his poetry skillz. And I'll shoutout Alexander489 too :3 i enjoy our talks ❤️ As for the older peeps, I will shout out Gary Oakster who most of you aren't probably familiar with but he was one of the first people I was friends with here!
There's so many people I could shoutout here that we could be here for days. All those names for sure, people like TheVexinator, Suninto Bandito, ImmaFirinMahLazer, Skarmchikora, OM, Spieky, and countless others who I met and shared great memories with in mafia games and just in conversations we'd have during dead hours. It was a fun time in my life when I had 0 responsibilities, and I'm happy I got to share those times with so many great friends.
What's a tip you could give to newer players?
Just keep playing! Mafia is a hard game and you won't understand everything at once but the more you play the more you will better know what to do, and you might even meet people that can help you learn
I'm too burned out on mafia these days to give any worthwhile playstyle advice, but just remember these are games, and games are meant to be fun, so do your best to make each game you play as fun as possible and enjoy your time in the room to its fullest!
also spieky for voice
What's your biggest contribution to the Mafia room?
LMAO but honestly like I don't think I did anything too major for the room as a whole other than just participating in a lot of room activities and games which I think is what most people associate with me anyways! I just try to make the room a livelier place and support new players so I'd say that's my biggest contribution to the room
Thank you for your time! Any closing remarks?
I think this pretty much covers it! I hope everyone reading this interview have a great time playing mafia as much as I enjoyed the game ❤️
Thanks for having me! This was a nice trip down memory lane and I enjoyed getting the chance to chat with you again
And thanks to anyone who took the time to read this, hope you have a great day!
