Today (April the 25th) is the day of the oscars! A prestigious award show, that I really don’t care about. Though I do care about music, and I decided to mix with my lack of passion for award shows, with my passion for music judging completions. So I took the best part of both and mixed them together, the flavor/aesthetic of award shows, and literally everything about music judging competitions.
Each category will be based off an award at the oscars, with each award going to the first place in that category.
Now some context for those who don’t know what a walrus is= A walrus is a competition where players will send me 10 songs, each song is supposed to fit in the category I provide. I will then score each song on a scale of 1-10, based on how well it fits the category, and how much I like it.
Before I introduce the categories let me go over some basic rules/ basic information.
1- The deadline to submit songs will be May the 9th. Each player will be able to change their submissions up until 1 week before the reveal of the category they wish to change subs for (So if you wanted to change your sub for cat 7 you could do so, as long as it is 1 week before cat 7 is scheduled to be revealed).
2- Scoring will be quite simple this time, every category (besides cat 10) will be judged out of 10, with 4 possible points going to cat fit, and 6 possible points going to enjoyment, cat 10 will have 10 possible points all of them going to enjoyment. And note that familiarity will not be apart of this walrus, though you probably won’t get full points if just try and pander to me the entire rus (and don’t even think about submitting billy joel).
3- The event will be held fully on This discord server and I would also prefer if submissions were given to me there (You may give me either a spotify playlist, or a YouTube playlist, I do not have a preference)
4- And lastly, the reveal schedule will be every Saturday and Sunday, one reveal each day. I’ll determine a specific time closer to the dates of the reveal.
NOW TIME FOR THE AWARD CATEGORIES-
1- Best International Feature Film
This award celebrates foreign films in all types of various languages, so for this cat I want the same! Send me a song that’s lyrics are in a non english language (Made up languages don’t count. Neither do wordless songs)
2-Best original Score
This score is meant to highlight those scores that can paint a picture just as beautifully as any song with lyrics could. And so for this cat I want a song that is wordless/ no lyrics allowed!
3- Short Film
For this category, I want to keep it short, just like the films the award is designed for. Either submit a song that is shorter than 3 minutes, or a song with 5 letters or less in the title ( I will count numbers and symbols in the title length, but I won’t count something like a space in between )
4- Best animated Feature film
This award highlights animated films, so for the category I want to highlight songs from animated cartoons! You can sub a song from either a cartoon TV show, or a cartoon movie, and yes Anime does count.
5- Best actress in a leading role
For this category I want songs that are sung by either a solo female artist, or a band fronted by a female artist!
6-Best special effects
Special effects always make a movie look cooler, and usually works best in cool fight scenes or action sequences. So for this cat I want something as equally energetic, a song that is hard hitting and high energy.
7- Best sound mixing
Out of all the potential awards, this may just be the most overlooked. But even though it’s overlooked, does not mean that it is unimportant! As such, I want songs from artists that have less than 700k monthly listeners on spotify. Alternatively I want a song on youtube that has less than 800k views (No
loopholes here, if you submit a lyric video that has 600k views but the original music video has 2 million views, then it doesn’t count)
8- Best original screenplay
In honor of the award that honors good writing and an original story, I want you to submit a song that tells a story! Something that has a cohesive start and end lyrically.
9- Best Cinematography
A lot of times beautiful cinematography can paint an amazing image of the world that a movie takes place in. And sometimes truly beautiful cinematography can move you to tears. So for this category that’s exactly what I want, I want you to move me to tears. Submit a sad/ depressing song for this category!
10- Best picture
And last, but certainly not least. It’s the only award that people actually care about! It’s always the grandest award and the pinnacle of the oscars. And to honor such an award, I don’t want anything specific. I just want a song that will knock my socks off and that will be the pinnacle of the walrus. (and I promise that I won’t LaLa Land any of you)
