Hi, I'm back with my second walrus! This time, our theme is reflections, mirrors and yourselves... A walrus is a competition where the participants submit songs to fit pre-determined categories given by the host. Each song is then scored base on how enjoyable they are and how well they fit the category. Submissions:
Only 1 submission per category, and you must submit a song for every category. All submissions should be sent privately, whether it be a forums pm or a discord dm. Submissions should be linked on a viable site I can listen to it on (spotify, youtube, soundcloud, etc.) You may join before the start date of August 22nd, 2021 (two weeks from now) but will not be counted as joined until I have all your submissions. Scoring:
Scoring is done out of 10, with how well the track fits the category, how original the track is, and how enjoyable the track is being the scoring guidelines. Try not to pander too hard to my tastes! The point of this walrus is get the best of your music tastes to listen to and judge!! Lowest score will be removed. All reveals will be posted in this thread. Deadline:
You have until August 22nd, 2021 to submit songs. The first reveal will about a week~ after Arbdelrus ends. If you would like to participate, please join the discord to find out the categories, as well as tag me to join!

Shadecession - Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson: 7.3 / 10
Hm. Think is definitely self-reflection but I'm honestly not sure I buy it from him, especially because I've never been a fan of MJ's slower songs. I dunno. Just think this one is eh for me boss. It's got all the stuff there that makes a song but it just falters on that clincher moment that brings all the pieces of the song together. MJ should've tried a bit harder to sing the gospel instead of giving up halfway.

ddlcfan69 - Hurt by Oliver Tree: 7.4 / 10
eh it's like a good song and I enjoy it's rockish punkish aesthetic but it doesn't really uh, hit anything for me really. I have more of an inclination to forget this song than I do to relisten to it.

Rainshaft - Fate (Type B.) by Hatsune Miku ft. Yasuha: 7.5 / 10
It is Vocaloid Hours. We must all give up our human forms and return to our artificial homes again for the night. Join us in this metallic word of bright lights and electrical impulses. I think we deserve more vocaloid acapellas. I think we deserve more vocaloid solos ala that Fun. one in Some Nights. I Think I don't get vocaloid and that hurts me. Also just think backing track doesn't fit the vocaloid, and I think it's the vocal's fault bc it feels kinda screechy on the ears. Tragic bc I'd totally just listen to the instrumental.

Edjeanerations: At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I used to be): 7.6 / 10
I feel like. You have submitted me a song from a children's television show. I could probably find this on sesame street, edjeanerations. It's way too clean. Too sterile. Too commercial. Gets a shit ton better in the last minute though. Still a Children's movie song.

wob - I Want Wind To Blow by The Microphones: 7.9 / 10
I really do not like this intro. At All. The instrumental does grow on me a fair bit by the end of the song but the fact that I just don't get the first 10 seconds of the song irks me. The end's also a bit of a cacophony but w/ the song's message I think it's purposeful and supposed to relate more to like the near mental breakdown this dude is having by the end

Micromorphic - Castle on the Hill by Ed Sheeran: 8.0 / 10
Lowkey this is one of ed sheeran's best songs but also it's basic as fuck, micro.

Sky - Anna Sun by WALK THE MOON: 8.1 / 10
I'm not sure if WTM's musical style realistically fits the type of song they're going for here, but I will give them points for trying. Think the vocalist needs to give more energy to his delivery to fit the production's tempo bc that feels like a sore disconnect on the listen.

Adam - This Must Be The Place by the Talking Heads: 8.2 /10
A really solid groove to start the judging off, I love how the high pitched main line contrasted & harmonized w/ the low pitched vocals, which stood out a lot more due to the weirder delivery from the bands front man. The minor issues that stop this song from being higher ranked was the random awkward moments where different instruments phase in and out - especially at the end of the song. That being said, the whole is still pretty solid.

John - The Logical Song by Supertramp: 8.3 / 10
I think the biggest thing for me from this song is the message of being forced into the world view of others. Life's magic being killed by what you go through during your life, being taught to be logical and cynical and wistfully thinking about the past of it all. Was nice to have a bit of existentialism in the midst of all this bc I think that's what I really wanted from this cat.
I didn't like the sax solo at the end though, and I think it's bc it clashes w/ the vocalist bc I liked the one in the middle.

Shubaka17 - 31 by Cheeze ft. Stella Jang: 8.35 / 10
It is time for Kpop hours except this time it's about age and how it affects your career and the standards forced upon you by the time you turn 31. Think the two artists here work really well together, and the song's really sweet and hits the note of empowering it's going for. Kinda struggle with if it empowers in a lame way or not though.

PassTheSaltDude - Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp: 8.4 / 10
I like this one because it thematically feels like PTSD is saying goodbye to his previous self and moving on w/ his life and it's reflected in how this is his taste from a year ago. I think my major issue is that it's vocal performance isn't like, my favourite, and I think the backup vocalists do a much better job than the lead vocalist does. Whistling part's a banger and so are all the solos.

Alexander489 - Down In A Hole by Alice In Chains: 8.5 / 10
Gritty, Melodramatic and Self-loathing - definitely something I'd pop on after a long ass day. It's a very human song that kinda makes me question whether you're okay, alex.

Arby - Changing by Sigma, Paloma Faith: 8.55 / 10
Huge high energy track that generally fits my tastes, I really like the vocals here and I really relate the message of being here too long. Furthermore, I'm a fan of the production, especially when we get to the chorus of people part @ the end of the song. I think what stops this song from being higher for me is that there are times when the production kicks into gear around the pre-chorus it feels like it's overshadowing the vocalist

ForgotToFlush - Set your Sight by Annalie Prime: 8.6 / 10
Really solid Reggae track, and I'm a huge fan of the pre-chorus into the chorus, it's doesn't feel overproduced nor does it feel like it clashes at any point. I think what really stops it from being any higher for me is how much it over uses the repetition of you in the final minute of the song.

Spiderz - WINNERS by Ron Suno & Sheff G: 8.7 / 10
I think it's funny how Spiderz's only note is "bc I'm a winner ongod" The over the top confidence of the track is definitely Spiderz though, but we needed more Sheff on the track bc he's the better of the two artists and it's hard to tell them apart.

Abdelrahman - Part II by Paramore: 8.8 / 10
Lowkey I want this as my background music all the time bc this is a fuckin banger. As I have Already Listened To This A Ton it doesn't hit as hard as it would've fresh but it's still worthy of a least a high 8

Drookez - She Used To Be Mine by Sara Bareilles: 9.1 / 10
This song I find really hard to score. On one hand, I really love the lowkey reflecting on your loss track, but on the other it's very hard to quantify that. I like the vocals, I enjoy how the stripped back instrumental compliments the message and the reflection. I like the message of hope, I love how the instrumental kicks off in the "used to be mineeeeeeee" part, especially the electric guitar

Mixolydia - Transgender Dysphoria Blues by Against Me!: 9.2 / 10
This is a perfect cat fit, yeah. Really like the instrumental here, and especially how it kicks in by the "Ragged summer dress" line and the entire song really breaks you out of what you're doing to just, like, listen to it.
Please do.

Yo this shit was smooth as fuck holy shit. This gave me vibes of getting in the booth and just jamming out for a bit, especially with the chillax vibes about not trying so hard. This is the first song I've actively wanted to go back and play on loop after the reveal.

C7 - Mirrors by Justin Timberlake: 7.1 / 10
Timberlake can make better and he fucking knows it. Mirrors' vocals are really boring, and the section starting at 5:33 was like, score saving. The back half of the song is so much better than the first half of the song, and the back half of the song is basically 3 minutes of him saying one line lmao
Suit and Tie was better.

Nah this one just did nothing for me sorry chief
Like, there is good pop. There is bad pop. And then there is boring pop, which is the most egregious of the three.
They did serve w/ the styles though

Smallworldz - Daylight by Maroon 5: 1 / 10
Cold is the good Maroon 5 Song to me, this one kinda sucks lmao. I just do not believe Adam Levine believes a single thing he is singing. Hell, he's probably singing about a stuffed animal he has to throw out. There is nothing in these lyrics to tell me this is an Actual Person he is singing about and not some object.

Schiavetto - Genesis by Daniela Andrade: 9.6 / 10
This is great vibe music for actual reflection on your life - which is awesome because that's exactly the subject matter. This is the kinda song where I'd take a walk to, thinking about myself and who I am and where I go from here. No real qualms here but it's missing that last push that'd make it hit a 10. To me it's like Teen Scene, a song I'd play to keep me comfortable, to keep me warm at night and think about how I could have worse, or how I could be better. But it's not to the point where it's obssessive, so I feel like something's missing.
