Smallworldz - Ego by Willy William: 7.2 / 10
This is so edgy for the guy who did that j balvin song lmao. Starts with the music box haunting vibe than breaks into the edm drop later on and it's just a sonic dissonance. Not really their best work imo.

Micromorphic - Dernière danse by Indila: 9.2 / 10
This one bangs!! Starting off with a really familiar feeling, it only adds to that with a triangle - and then once the vocals hit you already feel like you're sucked into the song. The song keeps building w/ new elements to let it's slower setup feel earned, so when it kicks into high gear it's just all the elements introduced already with the addition of a pulsing beat and drums behind it.

Drookez - L'escalier by The Pirouettes: 9.3 / 10
I wasn't expecting to like this track when it started, especially because it starts off feeling kinda stilted and robotic, but it really builds itself up and grows as the song goes on, giving it a low budget 90s feel (ESPECIALLY with the terrible cgi in the music vid LMAO)

Alexander489 - MERCI LE HESS by Gambi: 9.5 / 10
This one's a jam, I really like how it builds up, and I am in love with this backing track and how it works with Gambi's flow here. Everything feels complimentary here and the jazzy feel of the track along with the positivity this elicits are just straight bangers.

John - Failure by King Missile III: 7.3 / 10
This is a hypnosis session, not a song. The pleasant monotone voice on the track is very reminiscent of Big Brother breaking you down so they can rebuild you into something that listens to them and only them, because jeez this is not, like, something you listen to on your own accord. This is shoved onto your ears and forced listening until you believe it. It's literal hypnotism as a track

Flush - REVENGE - #12 TV size by A Bunch of Anime Girls: 7.4 / 10
Anime does 0 for me. That being said this was a fun track, but I think it misses in terms of category fit - it's too hopeful based on lyrics (I think they are the right lyrics, you sent me a random anime song bro)

Abdelrahman - In The End by Linkin Park: 7.5 / 10
It's, like, fine. Nothing special really. Major thing w/ the song is it's about coping at the end of a relationship, and how much "better" the dude got out of it now. Honestly, the dude just sounds lame as fuck

Bath - Fear by Kendrick Lamar: 7.6 / 10
Meh, I think Kendrick's got tracks that just do this a lot better, and tracks that are just better overall. This song feels messy in terms of execution, and the way it ends feels reallllly out of place for a song about wanting to get rid of your fears whilst simutaneously talking about how you're going to die bc you're 17.

Alexander489 - Failure by Breaking Benjamin: 7.7 / 10
Edgy Rock - Filled with 2000s aesthetics and Linkin Park Influences! This song is nice in terms of lyrical content & vocals, but I'm not sure how I feel about the instrumental portion of it, I think it tries to have the guitar carry the song instead of doing something interesting, and it leads to the guitar feeling very samey and dragging the song down.

Shubaka17 - That Funny Feeling by Bo Burnham: 7.8 / 10
I dissociated so hard when listening to this song, but like, more in a "oh this was playing" kinda feeling. I think the lyrics are cool and I get that "the funny feeling" is supposed to be "something's wrong here" but the laidback guitar style of it is really meh for me, especially when there are better songs from the special

Spiderz - Enough for you by Olivia Rodrigo: 7.9 / 10
In this flavour of breakup, Olivia changed herself to get liked by her ex and is now punishing herself for loving them now that they've left her. This one's kinda meh though, driver's license did the slow song better, whilst good 4 u did spite better, so this song sits at an awkward middle ground between the two where it's trying to match good 4 u's anger and the wistful guitar track of like, an ed sheeran track - which I don't think works here.

Drookez - Liability by Lorde: 8.0 / 10
This song puts the melo in melodrama, with Lorde taking the "I'm too tired to emote fully" approach of this. It works in favour, and the believability of Lorde going "I'm a fuck up for everyone but you despite everyone saying you're a liability" works well here. It loses points in the basicness of the backing track, which got a bit boring after a while.

Schiavetto - bottom by TOOL: 8.1 / 10
The song's actually pretty good to do work to, and I appreciate the self-destructive tendencies the song displays, with it's dark and gritty instrumental complimenting the singer being at the rock bottom of everything, broken down at the end of day. Think my issue with it is that spoken word portion in the middle, which really brings you out of the experience and is kind of something I'd rather just skip over.

Rainshaft - Last Hope by Okame-P feat. AI Kiritan: 8.2 / 10
Yeah this bangs. Whoever made vocaloids finally understood that making the vocaloids drowned out by the instrumental is actually a good thing, because then they just sound like another instrument instead of trying to be the replication of human voice, and when they're used like that they are like, infinitely less annoying. Appreciate the energy this track has, and the linkin park aesthetic of the instrumental.

SS - My Immortal by Evanescence: 8.2 / 10
This was surprisingly really good!! I enjoy how this shows feeling like you've failed someone important in your life, as you watch them hurt more and more despite how much you're trying to help them, and how much that'd hurt you in the process. All of this works well w/ Evanescence's sad girl hours aesthetic.

Pisxel - Teen Idle by MARINA: 8.3 / 10
I took a bit of time judging this one because it didn't really sit with me upon first listen. It's an obvious category fit, with the want to be anyone but yourself and the highschoolish bubblegum pop of some of it (super super super [redacted]) contrasts w/ the darker tones that marina usually hits in her songs. I'm still very I don't know about it, honestly. I may re-edit this score post-reveal

Wob - Adam's Song by Blink-182: 8.35 / 10
Solid song, pretty spot on / on the nose when it came to the worthlessness portion. Slightly hopefully at the end too. Main thing I really liked about it was the "tell mom it's not her fault" line and the added layers of guitar at the final chorus verse

So true, Nate. The bad days aren't that bad because we're going to fuck up even worse from now. It's pretty standard in Nate terms, big voice, piano tracking and bombastic tone, so it gets a pretty standard score

PassTheSaltDude - Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons: 8.5 / 10
Flush hates this song, but luckily I do not, because it bangs. Songs pretty shallow in regards to the failure part, but it's a large part of the chorus so it slides. The best part of the song is the banjo and / or guitar playing, which hard carries the track's pacing, allowing Mumford & Sons to keep a feeling of movement in the track despite the vocal delivery being pretty static throughout. They know this too, because with each time the instrumental breakdown happens they cut the vocals or use it more raw / instrumentally to build up to said breakdown.

Shadecession - Broke by Samm Henshaw: 8.6 / 10
Man's taking L after L on this track, but it feels like such a casual song. I'd probably jam on the sidewalk to this one, because it's such a flippant disregard of the world to focus on a relationship and it's issues.

C7 - Float On by Modest Mouse: 8.7 / 10
I remember listening to this song when I was 16 and not liking it very much, so listening back to it nearly 4 years later and finding out that it's actually a pretty good song is pretty nice ngl. I love the guitar line and the general "Fuck it" vibes of the song. The song interprets failing as a "who cares, we'll be fine later" and that hopeful take on it is pretty nice, and is fit very well by the airy vibe of the backing instrumental.

Sky - Tonya by BROCKHAMPTON: 8.8 / 10
This one started pretty slow, but I think it more than made up for it with a really great use of samples and pacing in the track - The song itself is dark and moody, talking about the feeling of not mattering, using a piano to start off, but building up with drums, and a sick electric guitar usage.

Micro - Cinnabar from the Houseki no kuni ost: 9.0 / 10
This is a lovely piece of music, literally the definition of a wordless wonder, the song soars in a way that's supposed to evoke feelings of something loss, with how it builds up to the one key in the end. It uses the orchestral build up to help create a somber atmosphere, something that would probably be played when you go home without the partner that's accompanied you along your journey and cry into your grandma's arms. I can generally glean what you're going for here, so I think it's a fit.

smallworldz - Anachronism by Crywolf: 7.2 / 10
This has the awkward feeling of being a macbook song as well as being a song and it's instrumental put together to extend the track to 5 minutes. Beyond the feeling of soullessness I get from the track, it feels like it's trying too hard to be safe and inoffensive to the point where it just puts me off.
