Congratulations to the Elves again! Overall, you played a very solid game.
I hope you all enjoyed the game. As it's a new setup, I'd love your feedback to see where the setup could go. I'll post my own thoughts now, and of course feel free to respond. Many thanks to everyone who agreed to sub in, as well! Special shoutout to TB2 who created very elaborate plans and often exposed flaws in my challenges.
In general, I think the game went well! I liked that the challenges were generally able to be sabotaged, and especially early on I tried to vary in what I think the optimal strategy for the challenge would be (having a leader, communicating with people who you trust only, more self-determined challenges). For example, the second challenge encouraged you to create little groups of people you trust. I was happy to see you all playing and sometimes intensively discussing. At the same time, it did not seem to be a huge burden timewise which is also something I appreciate.
For the record, the game is No Reveal, as I think knowing both Spies are out is a huge advantage. Right now, at least Spies can "play dead" while not sending messages while not necessary, but still sabotaging.
The game is survivors win, because then everyone has a reason not to be voted out. Especially as you do not know if all Spies are out, you always know that you do not want to be voted out. I think this aspect makes everyone a little self centered and makes the game more interesting.
I think in the game, Spy effected the game too little. They were often afraid to sabotage and/or communicate. I was not always sure why the sabotage, and do think they could often have tried to have more impact on the strategy. I could reveal even less information about the challenges, but I am unsure about this as it would also be quite boring to just see "YOU LOST!".
I think it would've been nice if Spies communication was a bit more open though. I am considering that, if there is another game, Spies could send messages to specific members of the opposing team. The problem is that they would not know if these users were Spies themselves. I could also possibly let the home faction send messages back.
I do think Spies have it tough. I almost considered giving them a different wincon (maybe allowing death too), but that seemed much easier than the wincon for other players. However, Spies are more likely to be voted out as on average they endure more eliminations.
I also think more interaction between the factions would be fun. In this game, I struggled with this as I could not think of a challenge where Dwarves and Spies had a reason to work together and exchange information, instead of staying quiet. I tried it with the ONUW challenge, but I don't think that worked very well. The game would have to be very big, but having three factions would be fun: then the challenges can involve two factions teaming against the third (maybe while trying to get 1st place at the same time).
Thinking of challenges was often hard, especially to keep it varied. All in all, I do think there were a wide variety of challenges, but it would have been fun if more of them had more decentralized optimal ways to play it. Also, it was tough to create a challenge that did not feel like "Luck" if Spies did not communicate, sometimes, while still incentivizing Spies to communicate. Maybe a challenge that could instantly eliminate someone could be fun as well...
I do not think solo challenges like Flappy Bird could ever work for this, as you cannot do more sabotaging than just failing badly which becomes quite obvious. Maybe you could more easily if you had to work together in something similar. Maybe in multiple groups. I would also have liked a Trivia challenge where you could work together to just solve them, but finding puzzles that you would not always solve in 24 hours took more time than I had available during the game.
Please respond with your thoughts of what was nice and what wasn't. I'll try to respond to you with my thoughts on what I'd do!
Maybe see you during Summer Circuit!
