The Most Active Games on the PS! Mafia Forums (so far!)
Compiled by ForgotToFlush
As the title says, I've taken the liberty of compiling the most active games on the forums, using postcounts as a rough estimation of general activity. Note that the actual postcounts are slightly inaccurate as they include things like introductory posts, vote-counts and postgame discussions. However, I think these contribute to minute differences at most, and therefore the overall order of the top ten shouldn't change all too much. With that out of the way, let's get into it:
Honourable Mention
Mafia Battle Royale (x)
Snaquaza and ajhockeystar (2017)
The first entry is the auspicious Mafia Battle Royale. While the postcount on this game isn't notable, it still remains as a landmark achievement for the room due to the sheer size of this game, so I felt like it was worth mentioning. The Social Game saw participants from 25 rooms on PS!, totaling at a whopping 75 players.

Pokemafia stands as the only Outside Contact game in the list, as a true anomaly among games of that genre. A contributing factor to the thread length might have been the runtime: the game lasted more than three months.

The opener for the 2023 Summer Circuit set the tone for the rest of the tournament, featuring fierce competition from both familiar faces as well as spirited newcomers. It is especially notable due to its MVP: Future Mafia Champion and Summer Circuit Winner Clouds, who kicked off their dominant streak here.

I've written about this game extensively in a previous edition of the newsletter (X). However, if you're unfamiliar with it, it was an incredibly active game for its time, and was also ripe with naturally comedic moments, from a myriad of strange hosting decisions, to an abrupt and anti-climactic final day.

Personally I find it incredibly surprising that a Popcorn game of all things turned out to be as active as it was, but looking back at the gameplay quality and the litany of big names on the playerlist, it should have been expected. This one went down to the wire, and ended up being far less casual than initially intended.

The spiritual successor to the Popcorn game once again featured famous players of old, and the level of competition was one again high. This one turned out to be a bit more nerve wracking. The mechanics of the theme created a very tense atmosphere, with the majority of the game being turned into a test of endurance. With both sides deeply invested in a war of attrition and neither willing to relent, this game remained active for its entire 15 day duration.

One of the three kickoff games of the 2021 Summer Circuit, and also the only town win of the 3. This one is especially notable due to the flow of the game. Town found themselves on the backfoot after multiple deaths of their own, but banded together to lead a counter-charge, taking the game to 7 days in order to get the win. Leading the charge was skyfigueroa, the Jailkeeper who stopped 2 Mafia kills to keep the Town in the game, and quojova, who accounted for almost a third of the thread's posts all on his own.

Another game with an existing newsletter piece (X) and quite possibly the coolest thing I've ever done on the forums. To summarize for those unfamiliar: this game involved a split-thread mechanic, with players separated into threads for either the Past or the Future, with opportunities to time travel between the two. There was an abundance of custom mechanics in line with the game's themed, as well as multiple aesthetic elements, including a custom soundtrack, special art for role PMs and flavour in the form of lore about the theme.

Season 10 Tryout Game (x)

This year's tryout game ended up being incredibly memorable (x). Mafia faced a strong town movement early on, leading to the last Mafia member looking forward at a very long road to a potential victory. Still despite the odds, they dug deep and survived all the way to a final three, fooling everyone in the process and taking it home. This game proved to be a great showcase of the talent that the room has to offer, and serves as a measuring stick for what future Championship representatives should look like.

Another 2021 Summer Circuit Game, this time the CS. First and foremost, the activity distribution in this game was marvelous; 8 different players had more than 100 posts. Secondly, the game was incredibly competitive right down to the wire. The final 3 lylo on day 7 lasted 8 pages all on its own.

Summer Circuit 2021 was certainly one for the books. Yes you're reading that right, that's a more than 1400 post difference between 2nd and 1st place. As it stands, it's hard to envision this record ever actually being surpassed, but I'd love to be proven wrong. This game is notable thanks to Schiavetto, who posted 865 times in this game, but only lived for 3 out of 5 days. That's roughly one post every ten minutes, and is probably the individual posting record for the forums (yet to be verified)!
Takeaways
It's always fun taking a walk down memory lane, and this time we got to see the capabilities of the player base when investment is high. These games were memorable in their own ways, but they all had a high level of competition, suggesting that increasing your investment can potentially lead to more engaging gameplay. It's definitely something to consider the next time you sign up!
